Also important to ask - what firmware version is the radio on? You can find out by pressing the bottom-most side button five times after you turn the radio on. Did you get a model 2 (limited keypad) or a model 3 (full keypad with numbers, etc). It's a great radio but the learning curve is a bit steep. #Redditnet IRC, Discord and othersWant to make contact with other /r/amateurradio members? Motorola Cps Programming Software Questionnaire How To Obtain ItNewer versions of firmware significantly locked down parts of the radio and make it far harder to work with.Actually.they are pretty decent. The firmware version and codeplug version your radio is currently sitting at will determine what version of CPS you can use with it.If your radio is on firmware version R17 or earlier, leave it there. I won't tell you how to obtain it, and you're right that you can pay $200 from Motorola for it, but I will just say there are other locations you can find it on the internet. Anything else will not go out of band. What is the best way of going about programming this radio for this purpose? There's two ways but likely only one available to you right now which is CPS. The only usable bandsplits for ham use (ham not HAM, not an acronym) are VHF and UHF-R1. Get google hangouts app for mac without chrome extensionBased on the OP’s original post I don’t think they understand the capabilities and limitations of the radio they have. I think the OP made it obvious he’s not interested in buying the CPS license as he said he was asking if there was a “better way”.The real question, does the acquired radio actually have the feature set the OP needs to do with the radio what he wishes to do with the radio. This I completely agree with. In the ham and scanner community, the CPS is almost always low-cost or free, and comes with a lifetime, unlimited use license. APX is a great radio, but it’s not a great scanner.Motorola is not at all aggressive about controlling their programming software.Requiring $200 every 3 years and pursuing legal action against any website that hosts free software is pretty aggressive when compared to most ham radio/scanner software. I agree the APX has a decent scan rate, but for the cost of a short-term CPS license alone, the OP could buy a much more capable scanner that could do 30 MHz to 1.2 GHz, trunking, multiple digital modes, etc. As for getting it programmed by a shop.that can be a much more costly option. The subscription means you get software and firmware updates for the period.the only time you would need to upgrade past that is if you acquired radios with newer firmware than the CPS you currently have supports. You have the right the continue to use it. When the subscription expires, the software you have doesn't cease to function (maybe it does with TRBO CPS 2.0 but that's not a ham friendly release anyway). Also make sure the systems you want to monitor aren’t trunked, non-P25 digital, or encrypted as you won’t hear anything even if the radio is properly programmed.Requiring $200 every 3 years and pursuing legal action against any website that hosts free software is pretty aggressive when compared to most ham radio/scanner software. They don't require $200 every 3 years though. I love the Astro 25 line however as it offered a lot of feature very handy to amateur radio operators that you just don't see in other lines such as MPL (user defined PL which is great for 2m repeaters), conventional voting scan where the radio scan a list and then automatically changed channel to the best signal in that list (great for linked radio systems), the install flexibility of the mobile radios (dash mount, remote mount, different heads and the HHCH options) and stored DTMF fucntions (which many amateur radios don't offer). One thing I really like about Motorola is that they began transition to what we would today call SDR architecture (using a ADC and DAC straight off the IF stage and modulating/demodulating audio via DSP) in the mid-1990's.The TRBO line is decent.I personally don't like how the amateur radio community has implemented DMR so I typically don't use it. Just something to keep in mind.Like any other manufacturer, they have their pluses and minuses.
